Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the age-old political relations and friendship with Italy as a good basis for developing cooperation between the two states in various fields.
In a Thursday message to his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella, the Iranian president congratulated Italy on its National Day and Republic Day, which is celebrated on June 2.
Commemorating the 160th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties between Iran and Italy, Rouhani said the age-old political relations, rich cultures, and historic friendship between the two countries have formed a good basis for the expansion of cooperation to serve their mutual interests.
He also expressed confidence that such a valuable legacy will help Iran and Italy promote cooperation by employing the ample opportunities and capacities.
Known as Festa della Repubblica, the Italian National Day and Republic Day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism.
