Linking counties’ interests to certain int’l system “strategic mistake”: Amirabdollahian

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, has said that it is a strategic mistake for countries to link their national interests to the fate of others and a specific international system, referring to the failure of traditional international coalitions that were based solely on security or economy.

The foreign minister made the remarks on his official Instagram page on Thursday after Iran officially joined the BRICS group of emerging economies.

Cooperating with various international mechanisms can be a suitable choice for countries to maximize benefits for countries; that’s why some BRICS members, despite maintaining good relations with the West, are still actively participating in this system, he said.

He also mentioned that BRICS is eager to play an independent and effective role in the international arena, which would help Iran in its pursuit of multilateralism, alongside other coalitions such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
