Saudi Arabia seeking Iran’s support for World Cup bid: MP

Tehran, IRNA – The Saudis have asked for Iran’s support for their bid to host the FIFA World Cup, says a member of the Iranian delegation that accompanied Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian in a recent visit to the kingdom.

“The Saudis announced that they intend to host the World Cup. They asked Iran to help Riyadh and vote in favor of Saudi Arabia in international meetings in this regard,” Shiva Qassemipour, an Iranian parliament lawmaker, told IRNA on Monday.

She also said Amirabdollahian’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia featured very good negotiations and agreements between the two sides, which if implemented, will lead to “very positive results.”

According to Qassemipour, the Saudi side has on several occasions invited President Ebrahim Raisi to visit the kingdom.

She said the president himself is also in favor of the visit to Saudi Arabia, adding, “Once the negotiations and understandings between the two sides are implemented, this trip will enter the operational phase, and the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran will also visit Saudi Arabia.”
