Iran’s FM Hails ‘Fruitful’ Meeting with Azeri President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian described his meeting with the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan as “long and fruitful”, hoping for a new page in the ties between the two neighbors.

Amirabdollahian, who traveled to Baku to attend a ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), met with Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday.

“Today, I had a constructive, long and fruitful meeting with the honorable President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, in Baku,” Iran’s top diplomat wrote in a tweet later on Wednesday.

“It is expected that this candid discussion will open a new page in the relations between the two friendly, brotherly and neighboring countries …and disappoint the ill-wishers of the two nations,” he added.

In April, Amirabdollahian and his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhoun Bayramov held two rounds of intensive talks about ways to settle the problems and correct misunderstandings between the two countries, with both emphasizing the importance of mutual respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the two states.

Later in June, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said Tehran and Baku have held several rounds of talks to mend the strained relations between the two neighbors following a January fatal attack on the embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran.

An armed attack on the embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan killed a staff member and injured two others on January 27.

The Baku government shut down its embassy in Tehran afterwards.
