Ali Larijani enters Iran June 28 presidential election race

So far, Mohammadreza Sabaghian, Mostafa Kavakebian, Abbas Moqtadaei, Ghudrat Ali Hashemtian, Saeed Jalili and Ali Larijani have registered, Mohsen Eslami, the spokesperson for Iran’s election headquarters announced on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday morning, registering the nominees for the upcoming early elections began during a ceremony in the Interior Ministry in Tehran.

The Iranian interior minister Ahmad Vahidi addressed the reporters who were present at the opening ceremony of enrolling the candidates.

Addressing the ceremony, Vahidi once again offered condolences on the martyrdom of President Ebrahim Raeisi and his entourage in the tragic helicopter crash, saying that, “Despite the great loss, we passed this crisis smoothly and there was no disruption in the country’s affairs.”

Interior Minister started the official process of the snap presidential elections last weekend with issuing a decree ordering governors of provinces and cities across Iran to set up election executive committees in their regions within the next three days.

The candidates registeration period which kicked off today will continue until June 3.

President Raeisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, two senior local officials, a protection officer and three flight crew members, were onboard a helicopter that crashed in mountainous regions near Iran’s Varzaqan region on May 19 as they were returning from a dam inauguration service held on the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan.

A council comprising of heads of three branches of the Iranian government held a meeting a day after the helicopter crash and agreed on June 28 as the date for early presidential elections in the country.
