Mohammed Moradi, the father of a young man detained in the November 2019 protests against Iran’s Islamic Republic regime committed suicide at his home on Monday, September 28, the Iranian website Emtedad News reports.

A Revolutionary Court in Tehran previously sentenced 26-year-old Amir Hossein Moradi to death, after he was arrested by security services and kept in a solitary confinement cell in Evin Prison for a month, also allegedly suffering beatings during his arrest and interrogation at the hands of security agents.

Per Emtedad News’ report, the cause of Moradi’s father’s suicide was “high psychological pressure,” “uncertainty,” and “concern about the execution of his son.”

Amir Hossein Moradi’s mother told Emtedad News that her husband’s body was found in the house’s basement.

“Before taking his life, he used to talk about his son until the last moment and wished that one day they would all sit at the same dining table again,” she said, adding that “hours after the suicide, the security forces were present at the house, as well as several reporters linked to the state-run Radio and TV network, who demanded an interview.”

Iranian civil rights activist Mehdi Mahmoudian said that the purpose of security forces’ presence at Moradi’s house was to obtain “forced confessions” from their family.

The execution of the younger Moradi, along with Saeed Tamjidi and Mohammad Rajabi, was announced last February. Tamjidi and Rajabi were also arrested during the mid-November 2019 protests that spread to more than 100 cities and 29 out 0f 31 provinces of Iran.

Moradi was sentenced to death on the charge of “cooperating in vandalism and arson with an intent to act against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” as well as sixteen years in prison and 74 lashes for the charge of “cooperation in nearly harmful armed robbery at night.”

Gholam-Hossein Esmaeili, the spokesman for the Iranian judiciary, confirmed the news of the three protesters’ death sentence on July 14 and accused them of “having links with certain ‘grouplets’ abroad.”

His remarks were widely condemned on social media, and the hashtag “do not execute”, which was seen billions of times around the world, became the primary Twitter trend for at least three hours.

Furthermore, top officials from some countries, including US President Donald Trump, Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have called for Iran ending executions.

On July 16, UN human rights experts strongly condemned three protesters’ death sentences and called for the verdicts to be overturned. According to those experts, the three protesters were tortured to obtain confessions, and these confessions were later used against them in “unfair” trials.

Following widespread domestic and international protests, the lawyers of the three protesters announced on July 19 that the Supreme Court had agreed to reconsider their clients’ case and that “the execution of the defendants would be suspended until the final judicial decision on the issue.” However, over the past two months, no further news has been published on the process.

US News Agency | Apadana Media

Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, who was hospitalised after going on hunger strike for over 40 days, has been returned to prison “without any medical intervention”, her husband said Wednesday.

“This evening, after 5 days of confinement in Taleghani hospital (Tehran), Nasrin was returned to prison in the worst of physical conditions without any medical intervention,” Reza Khandan tweeted.

“This act has no meaning other putting her life in danger.”

Sotoudeh, 57, who announced she was going on hunger strike last month to demand the release of political prisoners and focus attention on their plight due to the Covid-19 pandemic, had been hospitalised after being “severely weakened”, Khandan said on Saturday.

On Wednesday, he told AFP that his wife “has just told me by phone that the authorities quarantined her… in a bare unit as soon as she returned to prison.”

“Because of her heart problems, I expected them to at least refer her to the prison clinic, especially after 44 days on hunger strike,” he added.

Sotoudeh, co-laureate of the European Parliament’s prestigious Sakharov prize in 2012, is serving a 12-year sentence imposed last year, after she defended women arrested for protesting compulsory headscarf laws.

On 11 August she and Khandan announced her hunger strike on social media, describing the conditions faced by political prisoners detained on “unbelievable” charges as impossible to tolerate, especially since they were offered no legal hope of release as the pandemic engulfs Iran.

The virus has so far killed at least 24,840 Iranians and infected 432,798, according to official figures released on Wednesday.

Sotoudeh has been held at Tehran’s Evin prison, where Iranian-French academic Fariba Adelkhah is in custody.

Khandan told AFP on Saturday that the prison had “not even told us” of his wife’s hospitalisation, of which the family were notified by one of her fellow inmates.

She had been transferred to the cardiac care unit shortly after being taken to the emergency ward of Taleghani hospital, Khandan had said.

“We were allowed to see her for a few moments,” he said.

“She was severely weakened, lost a lot of weight and had sunken eyes”.

TO ADD YOUR NAME TO THE LETTER SIMPLY PUT YOUR NAME IN THE COMMENT BOX :

Calling for unity of all Iranians around the world as, with hearts full of pain, we have all witnessed the gradual destruction of our beloved Iran at the hands of the Islamic Republic Occupied Iran for the past forty years.

Brave Iranians’ daily embattlements with the occupying regime continue under the most difficult and treacherous circumstances. Many Iranians brutally perished and remarkable talents are wasted despite all their capacities and abilities demoralizing many with inequality and oppression of human dignity.

Fellow citizens: On the eve of the one hundred and thirteenth anniversary of the Iranian Constitutional Revolution of 1906, we emphasize that what transpired in 1906 thru 1912 was The Constitutional Revolution, and what transpired in 1963 thru 1969 was the White revolution. However, what transpired in 1979, after forty years of disclosed evidences, documents, and living testimonials, we emphatically declare it as the catastrophe of 1979.

The catastrophe of 1979 led to the illegal cessation of Iran’s constitution of 1906 and to the abolition of basic human rights; especially impacting women’s suffrage under sharia law, succumbing them to gender apartheid, and creating grave danger for anyone who protests against this discrimination. Iranians have been and are subject to daily suffering humiliations, beatings, imprisonments, tortures, and brutal executions!

In a world where women in many countries are progressing in the political, economic, scientific, cultural, artistic, and sports fields of men, Iranian women courageously fight tremendous repression only to face brutal violations of their basic human rights.

We, along, with peaceful equality, seeking women and activists inside Iran and around the world condemn the multi apartheid occupying regime in Iran. In this regard, we emphasize that Iran’s Constitution 1906 Ira Reform of 1963 known as the White Revolution are Iran’s national treasures and the heritage entrusted to us by our grandmothers and grandfathers who fought for freedom and democracy, “Not Subject to HOLIDAY”, and remain the law of the land to guard the territorial integrity of Iran and to protect the human dignity of all Iranians.

We, along with all Iranian freedom fighters inside Iran and abroad, who hold up the true Lion and Sun Flag of Iran, stand by the true law of Iranians, the Constitution of 1906, and it’s White Revolution Reforms, and do hereby call for its immediate enforcement under the United Nations Charter for humans rights and international treaties. Like any other free country, we call for this until such a time as when Free Elections will be upheld in Iran so that a parliamentary constitutional assembly can update the law of the land and create a secular democracy followed by referendum for type of governance by Iranians for Iran.
